Why are they called "cool season grasses"?
The reasoning behind putting these grasses
in this category is because they perform best in areas with temperatures ranging
from 50-85. Aside from other popular grasses from the eastern half of the
U.S. such as: Bermuda grass, zoysia, centipede grass, and St.Augustine grass,
which perform best under conditions where the temperatures are warmer. For
instance, the Southern United States has these grasses, and they grow from
Northern Tennessee and further south. However, the areas of Appalachia, especially
Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and parts of Maryland, either cool or
warm season grasses can be maintained, depending on conditions of the area.
To sum this up, there are three major grass zones in the eastern U.S.: the
Transition zone, Cool zone, and the warm zone.
