**The general rule of thumb when it comes to mowing grass is to cut off one-third of the blades height.
Any grass regardless of cool or warm season -- will never respond well to having more than a third removed at any time. Grass blades are the food factories if the grass plant and removing too much of the working part of the plant puts the plant into shock and much of the nutrients are lost until the leaf grows back and seals the "wound" made by the cutting.
Bentgrass
This unique grass needs special attention paid to it. Mowing needs to be taken seriously when dealing with bentgrass.

Fescue, Blue, and Rye grass:
These grasses are very similar in growth habit, cut of height and uniformity, for this reason they are often intertwined on home lawns, as well as the "rough" on a golf course.
Bluegrass:
one to three inches
Ryegrass: 2 to three inches
Fescue: 1 to 4 inches (Depending on cultivar).
