Irrigation

Another key element in maintaining a high quality turf area is proper irrigation.

Know when to water:

Watering is necessary as needed
The best time to water is in the early morning (before the sun is up).
- this ensures the grass gets a chance to take up the water before the hot afternoon sun gets it.
Be sure to NOT water just before dark
- the water will not evaporate and it will sit on the grass overnight, creating a feeding frenzy for fungus reproduction.
Afternoon syringing is used on golf courses everywhere to keep the turf cool, and to keep it from burning out.

Know how much to water:

It is important to find the right amount water for your area of turf.
When there is less rain water there must be more irrigation.
Do not overwater (this can do more harm to the grass than good).
-be sure that if your are hand watering, to not spray water directly at the turf. This can cause injury to the plant.
